How to Become a Certified Tarot Card Reader
Certification in tarot reading is entirely optional. There is a strong debate on both sides as to the worthiness of the said certification. To those who oppose, they feel that it was just a means to boost the confidence of a self-doubting tarot card reading aspirant. But for the others, getting certified means meeting a standard and it provides proof that they have mastered some specific skills in the field of tarot card reading. So, how does one become a certified tarot card reader?
Generally speaking, one has to select a certification body, pay a fee and pass a tarot card proficiency test. The examinee will also have to submit written proofs of their tarot card reading skills, perform specific number of readings, and for the higher levels, will have to teach a specific number of people and publish articles approved by the certifying body. The exact requirements for each level of certification vary, so does the fees being paid.
In the United States, there are two known certifying bodies – the Tarot Certification Board of America and the American Board for Tarot Certification. Other countries also possess their very own certifying bodies. These are the Canadian Tarot Network, Tarot Guild of Australia and the European Tarot Certification. There is even one certifying body that operates internationally known as the International Tarot Association.
The Tarot Certification Board of America offers certification on seven various levels. These levels include Certified Apprentice Tarot Reader (CATR), Certified Tarot Reader (CTR), Certified Professional Tarot Reader (CPTR), Certified Tarot Consultant (CTC), Certified Tarot Master (CTM), Certified Tarot Instructor (CTI) and Certified Tarot Grandmaster (CTGM). The American Board for Tarot Certification, on the other hand, offers only five levels of certification. These include certifications for Tarot Associate (TA), Tarot Professional (TP), Tarot Masters (TM), Tarot Education (TE) and Tarot Sage (TS). Amateurs and professional tarot readers can apply for certification.
Getting certification is necessary at times for there are states and areas which legally require tarot card readers to be certified. Local laws sometimes demand these certifications in order for the tarot reader to practice professionally. Tarot readers are just like other professionals who provide their service. Some clients feel confident in consulting one that is deemed a certified practitioner. The certifying bodies help to establish an accepted standard of excellence and ethics for both professionals and amateurs. They also aim to establish a legitimate area of practice before services are being offered to the public.
